Caithness, Strathearn, Monart? Bowl ID help if possible please
I have always assumed this bowl to be Caithness but have now been told that it probably predates Caithness and could be Strathearn or possibly Monart. It is 10 CMS TALL X 15 CMS DIAMETER, has a domed base and a rough pontil ( as if it has just been snapped off and not polished). It has an original paper label which I assume to be the retailer ELWELLS HARLOW ESSEX (NOT A GREAT GLASS MAKING CENTRE) which says that is British Hand Made. The bowl is in a pale pink and white cloud effect. Any help much appreciated John

Hi John - Most Strathearn I've ever had always had the leaping Salmon impressed mark to the base, but I can see where you are coming from. Could be Monart also but I would have a look at a few Nazeing pieces as they also did that effect and it would be on the shops doorstep?? Just a thought!

I was thinking the same thing, given the retail label and location. The MD of Nazeing Glass is still e-around, we could ask him maybe?Unless someone knows for sure.

Well done guys, yet again. Have just looked on ebay and found identical bowl in turquoise even with same retailers label. I am so impressed with, and grateful to, the contributors on this site. You are a godsend to us less knowledgeable. Thanks again John

Stephen? Did he ever join our forum - I can't remember. I'll email and ask.

I couldn't help you with this query - I'm not at all clued up on Scottish glass other than knowing a little about Caithness but it's great to see members being able to help each other out. I'm sure you'll be helping other members with their queries John :)

It seems likely to me that this was made by Nazeing. There is much debate about whether Elwell was actually a manufacturer. The company was certainly a wholesaler. The term is used in the company's advertising but perhaps designer or "we have stuff made exclusively for us" might be better.
The following links might prove interesting. BTW Essex has a long history of glassmaking (lots of wood) and is one of the few places where "English" glassmaking continues. http://www.nazeing-glass.com/
