Mystery ceramic bird - Margaret Hine or Ikea??
Can anyone help me identify this pottery Dove / Pigeon? It is approx 250mm tall and is made from slipware. The decoration is handpainted using what looks like a wax resist method? I know that the potter Margaret Hine was famous for her birds in the 50's but not sure if this is one of hers or just something old by Ikea? The base has no marks apart form a raised code 24E and an inscribed 930, there is also a mark left by a sticker but i think this may have been a felt disc. This was an impulse buy at a carboot sale, I asked the seller about it and he knew nothing apart from it same from London?? (Probably Ikea London - ha ha!)

Mystery ceramic bird - Margaret Hine or Ikea??
Thanks Davee! Would never have worked that out. The last image of a cockerel is almost it's twin with regards to the feet and the style of decoration! Not a bad purchase for £2 then??

Mystery ceramic bird - Margaret Hine or Ikea??
Hi Dantheman - I have a few pieces but don't specifically collect it. This was one of those objects than when you picked it up you just got a feeling it was something special (and afterwards the doubt sets in?). The collection I do have features Troika lamps and vases and a couple of pieces Cairn, Bernhard Rooke, Cinque Ports, Rye (Sharp), Bernard Leach (I think they are?) and even Shelf Pottery (Halifax). My main passion is Glass though with an eclectic mix of Whitefriars, Scandinavian, Italian and Sklo Union. I have lots more mystery objects in my collection which I will add to these forums so keep your eyes peeled!

Mystery ceramic bird - Margaret Hine or Ikea??
Anyone hazard a guess to it's current value? Condition is perfect. (This should be interesting!?) By the way I'm thinking of hanging onto it for now. :-)

I'll give you a tenner for it, if you really want to get rid of it

Re: Mystery ceramic bird - Margaret Hine or Ikea??
as a general rule there are no set values for ceramics that are less than 100 years old,in most cases it depends on how much buyers will pay on the day.
Ebay would probably be the best way to test the market & a healthy reserve would be £250 ish.

OK, thanks Dantheman. As I say I'm hanging onto it for now, I've emailed the studio pottery site that Davee emailed a link to so they can add a photo of it to their knowledge base as they didn't have it listed. Thanks to everyone for their help with this one!

Noticed this isn't listed as Parkinson as she obviously didn't know at the time of listing. If I were her I'd have closed early and relisted to make sure I received the optimum exposure? Be interesting to watch however, no doubt there will be lots of people watching thinking they will get a bargain with a last minute snipe!
