Royal Barum Ware : C H Brannam Ltd

Post by Last Chance on July 30th 2011, 9:55 pm

I am hoping that someone can help with any information regarding this vase.

It is a hyacinth vase that features the Royal Barum Ware backstamp, but we are completely at a loss as to the date it was produced, the designer's name, etc. It would be so helpful if there were any catalogues to assist us, but we have already tried the museum (of Barnstaple & North Devon) three times without success.

Any help you can provide would be most welcome. Two photos are included that may help.

My gut feeling is that it is not very old but I am not an expert in Brannam wares.

I think it might well be the backstamp that is currently used so my guess is that it is no older than 1980.

Many thanks for your input. My own thoughts are something along those lines, but it's a pity the museum cannot confirm one way or the other.

Not sure why the post ended up in 'ID' when that's not the point of the question, but hopefully it can be moved back to the British Pottery forum?

This fish jug bears the date for 1891 and is incised with the motto, “From Mother Earth I took my Birth – Then formed a Jug by Man – And now stand here filled with good cheer – Taste of me if you can”.

Rare Brannam monkey

Post by TeTai on July 12th 2013, 6:57 pm

Hello all, I was wondering if anybody knew anything else on this specific piece.

The bottom reads Brannam 1895 / 1893? and some people have speculated that it might have
been used as an inkwell.

Iv'e seen one before described as an inkwell with the scroll piece designed as a holder for the pen , it's a very nice piece and quite rare.

Very nice. Rare piece. I agree, probably an inkwell. Signed on base C.H. Brannam Barum, with date.

Potted biography of the company here:

It does resemble the style of work produced by the Baron pottery that was established in Barnstaple in 1895 and remained there until the late 1930s. That pottery was started by William Leonard Baron, who had been the chief designer at Brannam for around 10 years up until 1893............ so, although not initialled on the base I very much suspect that it is a William Baron designed piece.

Brannam Ware

Post by lindylou08 on September 23rd 2013, 6:28 pm

Bought this weekend in Bideford as I was in the area on holiday so looked in on the Pottery Festival.

Ch Brannam, Barum by Frederick Bowden dated 1906. 18cm high. Small areas of repair - photos don't give the true colour
