Yellow Vase - Is it Riihimaki? ID = Bo Borgstrom for Aseda

Post by mjron on Sun Oct 11, 2009 11:29 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and happy to have found it.

I believe this is a Riihimaki piece but I have not been able to find one quite like it. It is unsigned.

Any help to id would be greatly appreciated.

MJ

Yes, it's Riihimaki - I'm just on my way out to take my daughter to school, I'll check my books for a date when I get back shortly.

I've not seen this type of cased opaque glass from Riihimaki, and can't find any reference to it in my (few) books on Finnish glass - so I'm quite surprised.

It's not opaque is it? It looks clear cased over a yellow colour see through glass to me (possibly uranium). Perhaps mjron could clarify for us...

It's a Riihimaki shape I've had before in ruby and turquoise clear cased.

It looks opaque to me - you can't see through to the other side of the vase, nor to the line where the vertical and horizontal surfaces join behind the vase.

Fairly sure, thinking about it, that it's a Bo Borgstrom design for Aseda. He designed a series of vases in cased opaque yellow and red.

Nic, I'm wrong and you're right (as usual!) it's an opalescent yellow cased in clear and is a 1960s Bo Borgstrom design for Aseda (see page 34 - Fire & Sea).

I still need to get Fire & Sea. I've Smoke & Ice, which is very rarely useful due to its decidedly duff fact-checking (or lack of), but it does contain some pretty pictures.

Hi Nic & Pip,

Thanks very much for all the help! I must admit that I own Fire & Sea, but couldn't locate it. Fortunate, because now I've found this wonderful site.

Thanks again,

Ron (MJ is my better half)
