Otto Form No.2121

Post by Raine Larcher on Sat Jan 10, 2009 3:23 pm

This one has a gold label with black print saying 'Otto Keramik echt handarbeit', Base has 2121 seemingly hand inscribed (the first number 1 is very difficult and could be the oddest number 9 but we both believe it to be a 1) and the grey felt stuck to the presumably unglazed area. About 17cms to the points at each side. Anyone got any ideas on age as I think this is much newer than the majority of my pieces? (Still lovely though to my eyes!)

I have never seen an otto vase with kind of base , It is usually just a label , no numbers , and felt on the flat base , looks lie 2921 to me , maybe another company with an Otto label ,

hmmmm it's a tricky one - I've seen a few Otto pieces with this same grey coloured felt on the base (my Otto's have the dark green felt on the bases) but, as Ed says, it's usually covering the whole of the totally flat base. One of my Otto pieces came with the felt peeled off by the previous owner and there was nothing at all on the base other than traces of the glue used to stick the felt. Gonna have to think on this one...

How interesting. So maybe the one I've put into IDMP is an Otto and this is a masquerader. It is exactly as I bought it with the label but I suppose some unscrupulous dealers could mess about with labels. I look forward to your further thoughts and any other opinions.

Oh, and Ed it does look more like a 9 in the photo but in the hand it is much more like a 1 with the little downwards flick being not quite right.
