How to upload images to your posts

Post by Nic on Mon Jul 06, 2009 1:30 pm

Method One - Follow this if you are starting a new post:

Step One - Getting started:

Above the text box where you type your post you will find a row of icons. The icons we will focus on for this tutorial are the 15th and 16th icons, located in the 5th grouping - like so:

If you wish to upload an image to this site's own image hosting service, click the first icon: and then continue to Step Two of this guide.

If you use another online service to host your images, like Photobucket, or you host your own, click the second icon: and then skip forward to Step Three.

Step Two - Hosting your image on this site:

After clicking on the first icon a menu will pop up so that you can locate on your own computer the image you wish to have hosted. On this menu you need to click the 'browse' button to find that image:

After you have located your image on your computer and have entered it into our system you need to click 'Host It':

This will bring up a second menu where you can choose how to display your images on the site:

The options are as follows:

Thumbnail: This will show a miniature preview of your image which, when clicked, will open full-sized in a new window.
Image: This will show a full-size image within the main post (not recoomended if you're uploading very large images)
Image url: This will show a standard text link to your image.

After you have selected an option select the full url and then right-click on your mouse to bring up your context menu, on which you need to hit 'copy' (or you can skip this part and just hit 'Crtl' and 'c' on your keyboard simultaneously). This will save it to your clipboard. Clicking the 'Copy' button next to the url doesn't always work as it requires access to your clipboard, which many modern browsers will automatically deny.

Then you need to click the first icon once again to close the menu, after which you can just paste the link into your post using either the context menu that is brought up by right-clicking on your mouse when hovering over the text space or hitting Ctrl and V simultaneously on your keyboard.

If you wish to upload more than one image, simply click the icon once more after placing your first image and click 'Upload' on the menu to restart the process.

Step Three - Displaying an image hosted elsewhere:

If you already have an image hosted somewhere else on the internet and you just wish to link to it, you will need to know its url (the address of the image, shown in the top bar of your browser when you view your image online).

When you have this address you're ready to click the second icon This will bring up a very simple menu into which you need to enter the url of your image:

This will automatically paste a full-sized view of your image into the top of your post. If you wish for the image to be elsewhere on your post, simply drag it around using your mouse by clicking and holding down over the image.

Method Two - Follow this if you're adding photos to an existing thread using Quick Reply

Step One - Getting Started:

This system is exactly as described above, only with a much smaller array of icons at the beginning.

As above, everything is controlled by two icons ( ) and these are located above the text box into which you're entering your response:

From this point everything is identical to Method One, so please refer to the following for further information.

If you wish to upload an image to this site's own image hosting service, click the first icon: and then skip back to Method One, Step Two of this guide.

If you use another online service to host your images, like Photobucket, or you host your own, click the second icon: and then skip back to Method One, Step Three.

Please do not hesitate to contact a moderator if you're having any difficulty uploading an image.
