Glit (Iceland)

Post by koobideh on Fri May 15, 2009 2:18 am

Have not been able to find much background info about Glit pottery, but apparently it dates from the 1960s and the earlier pieces incorporate lava rock into the glaze. Quite distinctive and easy to recognize, and those little lava bits are really sharp! (as in razor-like). Here is a decorative plate I found recently.

That is brilliant!!!!! No mucking about with glazes just bung real proper pieces of lava on it... Jumping For Joy

Have never heard of Glit before but will attempt a little research.

Most of the info I've found has come from Ebay listings ... I also bought what looks like a candle holder the other week; will post a pic soon. I have the impression that the later pieces don't have the lava glaze?

My husband just told me that he saw a Glit vase the other day but didn't buy it because it was chipped to the rim. He said that the pieces of embedded lava were so sharp he almost cut his hand on it!

Glit pottery mark?

Post by kwistie on Mon Nov 14, 2011 10:32 pm

I recently found a mug/cup with a GLIT mark on it, and I'm trying to find out if this is a legitimate mark for Ragnar Kjartansson's Glit Pottery Studio in Iceland. The mark is stamped/carved with and infinity sign with GLIT below it, and then the number 50109 below GLIT.

With the mug was some information from my husband's grandmother. She had written on some masking tape that was on the mug.
"Iceland 1979, made from volcanic lava" and "got in Iceland"

I've looked for Glit pottery marks online but couldn't find any that looked like the mark on the bottom of my mug. Does anyone have any information that could help me out?
