Dartington pottery Bowl with label - JT?
Hi
Struggling to master contributing to this forum. I have put up two photos of a large Dartington Pottery bowl which I bought some years ago. It has a paper label though with an old phone number. My guess it was a Janet Tchalenko design. Just wondered if anyone knows how to date by the labels.

Ah yes! You are right in assuming it's a Janice Tchalenko design,I'm not sure of the date but it was called umbrellas.I understand that it was not a great success at the time though..

Re: Dartington pottery Bowl with label - JT?
Thanks for that - it stands up well with my other ceramics in a 21st century kind of way especially against plainer but wonderful glazes like Pilkington and probably eclipses some of the more blobby Poole Pottery pieces I have.

Re: Dartington pottery Bowl with label - JT?
Hi there folks
First of all I do have reasonably good credentials re Poole Pottery by virtue of age, place of birth and a long interest in matters ceramic and the arts. I have watched fashions come and go, used Poole pottery all my life on a daily basis. I have seen the influences and cross overs of Devon and other Dorset potters and pottery etc.
No, blobby patterns are ok. I have like some of you been able to see many of the trial patterns as well.
For all the above reasons I have formed the opinion that popularity hasnt always equaled quality. It still amazes me that early Poole isnt given the high standing that it should have received. There have been other golden periods not least the Art Deco pieces and of course one of the old core parts of business their TILES!
When I go to PP rarely these days as I no longer live there there is hardly anything I would want to add to my collection or an even bigger test, live with.
I understand the needs of business models but it doesnt convince me that it makes for stunning pottery. So for instance The living glaze craze generally leaves me "cold".
I guess the only pieces I have bought in recent years are say the Anita Harris vase in turquoise with the shell knob. I have two of the Millenium limited edition pieces of the planets. And I have some individual pieces made for export ie the Cockrels, and the Tiffany tulips and one or two oddities like the Ian Messiter fortune telling cup
From the past I guess Robert Jefferson also impressed me given the number of pieces I have of his - many in daily use.
Sadly I recently dropped a whole tea service of JT's Poppies on my ceramic tile floor - three odd pieces survived :sign2: (thats one way to reduce the bulk of my ceramic collection I suppose) to bring us back to roughly where we started except to say that this JT bowl is stunningly made and decorated.
So this grumpy old woman will send photos of some more pieces if you like. I have just sold three tiles but retained pictures of them. Best
Susie
