Identifying pottery

Post by big ed on Fri Nov 07, 2008 2:54 pm

I think there is always going to be problems attributing some pottery to company names , studio pottery I think we all know is practically impossible in some cases , as every street , night school , etc has stuff floating about with budding artists initials on them , but even the bigger names give us probs , as this still an early learning curve , thank god companies like moorcroft , poole etc marked the pieces , but for the likes of W/G keramiks it is very difficult , for example has anyone ever seen a Roth label on their chimney vases , ? yet they are on the really popular ones arms vases etc , why is the numbering styles different on them ? ,mistakes have already been written in books and will probably continue to do so , , IDing pieces by numbers alone is useless as everyone uses similar NO's. , companies like carstens , Kreutz, roth , soendgen , even ruscha , get mixed up , because a couple of people decide in their wisdom that they are correct , I think a lot more research is required , What U think?

I think WGP will always be difficult to ID. I have started to build a massive database with information from all sources: books, internet, own collection and forums. That is to my opinion the only way to ID WGP, information and even then it will be impossible to ID all. And that is maybe one of the the charmes of collecting WGP. It's the thrill of IDing an unknown piece. And about this book I think we will talk differently when it eventually will come out and will help some of us collectors IDing.

I managed OK IDing stuff for my website long before I came into contact with a certain alleged author (for ease of reference let's refer to him as Mr Mitty) and I shall continue to do so using the books currently in print. There's an update to Mark's Fat Lava book due out soon also I believe which will be useful.
