Thanks again.
Searching for Carstens Keramik, Gerda Heuckeroth, or the pattern nr. 4372 doesn't bring up anything...
On the other hand I have seen around 20 of these vases in Vienna during the past years. Seem to be really Austrian bound :-)

Well as Carstens were made in south america , austria , germany and australia , maybe they did only have certain forms for areas but that doesn't seem like good business .

I know the person that writes the site below had a similar piece plus a book that showed this decor.

5 x Carstens Tönnieshof 1512-14

Post by Zijperspace on January 3rd 2013, 7:55 pm

They look very similar to Sawa 347-20, but smaller and no sgraffito. Red clay though, like Sawa. See the other thread.

Thanks, Bas :pig:

Hi Orpheus!

If your vase is around 20cm high it should read 5047-20. I have the same one here :-)

Another one of these Carstens Austria disc vases, giant version (never seen that before) -- height 31 cm, width 34 cm.
And quite a spectacular glaze...
Marked 4372/30.

As I have seen 5 or 6 of the smaller ones since I posted the first one, and still not one marked "Germany", I guess these are really Austria-bound.

Possible Carstens Footed Bowl 1057-20

Post by beedragon on July 19th 2013, 10:30 pm

I found this little bowl (19 cm across x 7 cm high) today in a charity shop. Not as inexpensive as I would have liked but not bad at $8. Researched today and found one other bowl with this number 1057-20 and attributed to Carstens but with different decoration. If anyone has any idea of time-frame or any other examples, I'd love to see them.

The body is red clay with the exterior glazed medium/dark green. The interior is dark turquois with an overlay of black (fat lava or volcano??). Around the inside of the rim is an iridescent stripe reminiscent of raku.

The black decoration on my bowl is raised (bumpy) so while it looks similar to the ashtray, the ashtray's black looks to be smooth and under the glaze.

Yes, the decoration on the ashtray is not raised and it has a kind of metallic glow.
