I figured I would bore you with a quick profile of the man behind this wonderful mosaic technique.
Jean Gerbino began his career in ceramics by working as a turner for the Massier workshop in Vallauris (1902-1905) He then left to set up his own pottery in Algeria where he was influenced by the wonderful Arab mosaic work and upon returning to Vallauris in 1919,he strove for 11 years, working in many of the Vallauris workshops to perfect the pottery that still bears his name.

This bowl was not made by Jean GERBINO who died in december 1966. It was made in the GERBINO workshop after 1980. At this time, I was ruling the workshop so it's easy for me to recognize the piece.

ps

Dan

I have no time to make an extensive search.
When I issued a search on the keyworg GERBINO, it returned nothing.

You may find some infos on my iDisk :

Several items may be interesting for you in the folder
Photos_YK

If you know where are GERBINO pieces described here, may you post here infos allowing me to find them. I'm retired but I'm more than heavily busy ;-)

On the label is written

Email
Vieux
Grès
de
VALLAURIS

This means that it's a pottery fired to less than 1000° celsius but is covered with a glaze designed to approximate the aspect of stoneware.
Happily, quite nobody use this kind of glaze nowadays.

They were numerous to use this kind of glaze between 1960 and 1980.

They just had to add a chemical product in the glaze to get this result.

Don't insist, I will not write what I think of them ;-)

Right, it's a Max's piece.
He married Marius MUSARRA's daughter.
Now, it's retired as a potter and he continue as a sculptor.

do you have examples of pre December 1966 Gerbino pottery to show us Yvan?

I would be interested in seeing the stamp on the base to make it possible for me to identify early pieces when they are for sale

I would be surprised if it was made in Vallauris. Potters working here know that Vallauris is spelled with tho letters L ;-)

I can only assume the pattern was called Valauris,I doubt it was even made in France

I'll ask someone to move it from the Vallauris thread

dantheman wrote:also any info on this stamp would be appreciated

I was talking to someone who knew Capron and they told me this was the mark of Caprons boutique also Capron was a great friend of Raymond Peynet who came and worked in his atelier . So my previous assumptions were not to accurate ,you live and learn.

The stamp Cercle du Soleil is 'encapsulated' betwen JA on the left and RA on the right.

I have no idea about this stamp.

my latest Gerbino bowl, the mixture of clay colours in the mosaic pieces seems more labour intensive than I have seen before, the walls of the bowl are also thicker.
I have an idea this may be an older piece but will have to research further....watch this space!

PS it cost £3.50 Excellent

RIGHT. I would say 1940-1960.

If you really paid it this price, it's a bargain.
