Dartington Pottery

Post by dantheman on February 7th 2008, 2:32 pm

Dartington Pottery is one of the unsung heros of the 20th century British ceramics world,With pottery giants such as Janice Tchalenko,Petra Tilly and Alan White, all chosing to work at Dartington in recent years, there is little wonder that the output was stunningly good.
Dartington closed in April 2006 when it merged with Grayshott pottery.

"Modern Art" is produced by incompetents, sold by charlatans and bought by ignoramuses?

It is enlightening to juxtapose "Fine Art" to "Modern Art"

Blue Wood designed and decorated by Petra Tilly.
Petra was asked to decorate all the Blue Wood pieces personally as it was important to keep the black outlines loose and quickly painted so if you buy one you are buying a very collectable piece

Dartington style cup and saucer,it seems to have a Janice Tchalenko design but the stamp isn't the usual DP but instead it's the letter M

Here we have a stunning signed example of the work of Petra Tilly, one of Dartington's most talented designers.
This mug was made at Petra's studio in Dartmoor in 2006 and shows her skill in the use of flux to infuse reduction stoneware glazes in a way that resembles those funky oil projectors that we all saw on top of the pops in the 60's & 70's.
I particularly like the simple strap handle that has been worked and refined into a thing of exquisite beauty, the nature theme is one close to Petra's heart and she does a lot of good work for conservation.

this is an older example of Dartington, probably made while David Leach still owned the pottery .
I'll have to do a bit of research as I have forgotten the designers name

possibly David Winkley
