Hi guys, I picked this dish today with what looks like an Ivan Martin stamp -  I am not familiar with his work so any help would be appreciated

Ivan Martin was at Cricklade pottery 1951-76. He trained at Winchcombe 1947-51, and ran the pottery with his wife Kay. Looks Winchcombe type, but the mark isn't right. His pottery nearly always comes with a Cricklade and a personal mark. His mark is a shallow capital M with an I runing through it, and just edging over the top. The M on this mark is much too deep. and in consequence the I is much to high. Not him. I have personally had a number of pieces over the years.

I believe it’s Iain Markham’s mark. Had a similar one confirmed by him; it’s not the version of his mark in the book

Iain Markham, Cumbria Empty Lovely cup - Iain Markham

Post by Beege September 26th 2018, 2:52 pm

Hallo all.
I like this cup very much and hoped to be able to identify the maker, however, the only clues are some short lines to the bottom rim.
My imagination allows me to see a potential V or M but I'm beginning to thing senility is creeping on much quicker than I would wish!
On one of the images (below) I have converted to black/white and enhanced to make it more legible, but I still find it illegible!!
Does anybody recognise these marks as something meaningful or should I seek medical advice immediately?
Thank you
Jack

That's an interesting thought Naomi as I considered Iain Markham. The reasons I wasn't totally convinced are:
1. There is no circle around the mark
2. The MI mark on my cup would visible if the dark bits of the mark are the gaps between the lines of the letters. Does this make sense? If so, brilliant...'cos I can then see the MI mark.
Thoughts?
