I don't think so. He was most noted for figurines and sculpture, and it's not quite the same as the one in the book.

I don't know - a quick google search reveals he did quite a few vases and other piece and was known to experiment with glazes. I have found 4 pieces online (not figures or sculptures) that are very different in style.

Here's a few:

The mark is hand written and so you might expect variances.

The first two links don't show a mark; the others are signed. And I'm not seeing a similar glaze or shape to this pot. As a collector I'd want to be able to tick off a number of similarities, rather than just accept one possibility as proof of attribution.

I've contacted the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery in Exeter, where he lived and died and who have a collection of vases and one sculpture by him. I have sent photos and asked their opinion. I'll update when I have news.

Excellent

The vase that was sold that came from there was signed like the other two. The jug was listed as having his 'personal seal'. I assume it was this one - http://pin.it/-Zho1X3

I sent the images to The Ceramics Dept. at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery and they said it looks like a mark attributed to William Ruscoe. I will wait and see what the Exeter museum say.

"they said it looks like a mark attributed to William Ruscoe" - well there are a lot of marks wrongly attributed to Ruscoe, imo. I see this is currently listed you-know-where, but no confirmation of the attribution

William Ruscoe's son's opinion. He writes:

Looking at the signature I can't say that it matches any signature on the Ruscoe pots I have although he used a number of different signatures including just initials. Normally he wrote William Ruscoe in full on the larger pots but there are a number of variations of initials on smaller wares. But none exactly like the one you have. However looking at your pot there are some similarities, for example the start of the W bends from the left at the top and the R curves at the bottom. The general appearance of the pot and its glaze looks very Ruscoe I have to say.

My conclusion would be that it could be a Ruscoe but I can't say for sure. I certainly never saw all the pots he ever made and there must be many out there.

it's a nice looking piece so no problem holding on to it until you find another example of the same monogram

I’ve split ben’s post off since we didn’t have a thread in Studio pottery for verified William Ruscoe pieces until now. Here’s the link
