Well-marked slipware - Pantasaph Pottery, Wales

Post by hercules brabazon on Sat Jul 15, 2017 12:37 pm

Nicely made slipware mug with Winchcombe-style wave decoration and honey-coloured glaze. No less than three seal marks: a silhouetted animal, perhaps a charging bull; a "W" in a rectangle; and, impressed sideways, a "P" in a circle surmounted by a cross.

The same shop also had three small bowls matching the mug,  impressed  with a different "W" (not a seal mark), and a plainer brown jug with the same marks as the mug.

Pantasaph Pottery. The animal stamp is a year mark, the W is one of the potters' marks. I only know John Christie's mark and it's not his, but it may be on the Pantasaph thread.

Thank you very much. Interesting, from the point of view of style, that Christie's co-founder, Patrick Adamson, had worked with Michael Cardew.

I haven't  find a suitable candidate for "W" yet.

Set up by Patrick and John, but they had several assistants and not all their marks are recorded. Worth contacting John at his Black Hills pottery and see if he remembers them
