Because of the lack of a mark I'd say late 19th Century -to- beginning of the 20th Century.

Japanese Satsuma ware and moriage Empty japanese Satsuma vase

Post by Flintztone May 11th 2013, 2:48 am

Hello, can someone help me identify this highly large decrative vase please.   I'm not sure whether this is Japanese or Chinese.   The marking also is a bit of a mystery, especially when the vase does have some age.  Most vases I've seen, do have markings in order to identify the country of origin.  This vase only has the markings 'foreign'. Shock

I'd have thought Japanese Satsuma.

Mid 20th century onwards would be my guess.

Post by charityshopaddict March 19th 2014, 6:45 pm

Could anyone tell me anything about this pair of vases ? They look like Satsuma but not sure if the base inscriptions are Chinese or Japanese. A Chinese colleague who saw one of them said the inscription made some sense in Chinese, however I think some characters are similar in both languages.
I've no idea as to their age, but they look pretty old, though perhaps a little crudely painted.
They are 32cm tall.

Looks like Satsuma ware from the photos , ie,  crackle glaze over earthenware, rather than porcelain.
The decoration looks like Samurai and servants or farmers.
I think the date is late 19th century to early 20th century. Made for the European market.

Many thanks.
I did a little more Googling and they appear similar to other Kyoto Satsuma vases around that period

Very intricately decorated piece of Satsuma. It's not marked and It's been suggested that it was part of a set only one of which was marked. It shows a young woman apparently saying a sad goodbye to a young man. Does anyone know what the scene represents?

Hello,

I've been asked to try and identify this for a friend of mine, its been in her family for around 100 years we believe, but with no markings, I'm not sure where to begin, so I thought I'd ask you lovely people!

It's Arita porcelain from Japan. Chrysanthemum shaped bowl. Made for export, hence the 'clobbered' design, where they threw everything into the pattern. Could well be 100 years old, the Japanese market expanded exponentially when they dropped their isolationist stance in the 1880s, so these types of export ceramics date from after that point. In the early 20thC import/export rules meant the items had to include the country of origin. Because this doesn't have a mark it could date from around 1900

Hi - looks like Japanese Satsuma ware. Imported in volume from 1860 up to 1930. The finest has very intricate decoration. I'm no expert so wait and the others may know more.

I think Crawford is right. I hadn't noticed the crazing. Arita ware is porcelain which doesn't craze. Satsuma ware is glazed earthenware which naturally crazes.

Just to add, despite its age they are very common. Master potters would have signed the back. The lack of a mark means this was made and decorated on a production line of workers - one person doing the figures, others doing the different colours of the decoration. By that method literally millions of pieces were made for export.

The circle with the cross is the Shimazu family crest, found on Satsuma. You can look at Japanese marks on www.gotheborg.com, but there's a real danger of going blind before you find yours.

I think it’s Japanese Satsuma moriage vase. Made in the 20thC imo, but possibly early. You might find the mark on the Gotheborg website

Japanese Satsuma ware and moriage Empty 10" Maruni & co Satsuma vase

Post by tigerchips December 31st 2020, 7:10 am

I'm just assuming it's Maruni & co, but it has a slightly different mark to the one on Gotheborg. It mentions this company was around until 1930's but it doesn't specifically say when this company started. Is this an older piece, just seems a bit worn for 1920-30's?

It's a bit damaged in that it has a small hole drilled in the side, probably been converted to a lamp base at some point.
