Chalkware wall plaque - Sophia Rosamond Praeger, Ireland

This plaque looks to have a French signature but it could be something else. There is nothing on the back but it has some age as the nails holding it in are old and rusty. Looks 20 or 30s maybe because the subject matter is very much of that time.

I have taken it out of the frame and taken more photos and done a rubbing of the name.

Sophia Rosamond Praeger. Chalk/Plaster of Paris moulding. She was an Irish sculptor and illustrator at the turn of the century and early 20thC, so you're correct that this is probably from the 20s-30s, well known for her pictures and models of children. She published a few children's books but her career was somewhat eclipsed by her more famous brother who was a naturalist.... I could go on and on about her. She is an absolute favourite of mine :), if you ever want to part with it led me know.  I have a Pinterest board dedicated to her work

Wow - that's amazing thank you. I had no idea and thought it was French. I may well want to sell as it's not really my thing, but I was drawn to it as I can see the huge skill involved and the movement of the children is captured so well - I just had to buy it and find out more. Will need to research prices.

Tbh it will probably be out of my price range :) You should try to get it over to Whyte's auctioneers in Ireland. Google 'Seven Children at the Seaside' from their 2016 sale.
