Large Ikebana vase. Slab-built. Possibly 60-70s vintage. Inscribed DW. - the textured surface, colour, and glaze reminds me of David Wright, but it's not his mark or the sort of shape he's doing now.
16" high, 10" across at it's widest point

I was trying to draw it for a friend and it now has a nickname beginning with p, which modesty prevents me from repeating on this forum. Embarrassed

I will resist saying that it is by a pretend Scottish potter, whose name is Willie Dick, but imagine that this is the pot referred to as being in the boot of your car waiting to be sneaked in the house. You seem to have done that part but how is Mr. M going to believe it has been around for ages without him noticing?

Now to the pot: - I think you made the right choice buying this rather than the bottle but not sure if you are going to be able to identify it.

It could be by a hobby potter but the size suggests that a large kiln was used to fire it and it is quite complexed so I would tend to think that it was by someone who was quite a serious maker.

The form does fit the time period you suggest and I looked back in a CPA (Craft Potters' Association) book to perhaps find some clues as to a name. Besides potters that I was aware of, there were two potters with DW as initials who had been members of the CPA yet I can find no reference to them or their work elsewhere. That illustrated for me that some information about potters active pre-1980 has been lost and is very unlikely to come to light unless a descendant sees an image like this, recognises it and decides to let us know.

So I can't really make any suggestions as to who made it but believe I would have bought it too and most likely put it in the garden where a number of my large pots go.

I was thinking that too. It has a heavy layer of dust inside so not a recent piece. I think maybe by someone proficient but not at the top of their form yet.
It's currently hiding in the corner of the lounge. Since hubby failed to see the new chair that was sitting there for a week before being dropped off at a friends house it may be safe there for a few months before being spotted.
