This pitcher at 36.2 cm. tall with no markings has us guessing.  It is quite heavy and made of a reddish stoneware clay.  The color in the images are lighter than in real life, darker brown with a light beige background.  We just added it to the collection, having traded from another collector who also knew nothing about it.  We would appreciate any information/thoughts/suggestions someone may have.  We think it may have originated in Europe.  The face has been painted on, whether that was at the studio or later, is unknown.  Thanks for looking.

I suspect it's a copy of a traditional/Classical form, but which country it's from, or how old it is, I couldn't say. Might be worth taking it to a museum to see if they recognise it.

I see totally what you mean, hadn't thought of that aspect. No museum in the area, so will have to find a different avenue. Thanks

You could email some photos to The Smithsonian. They've helped me in the past, but you need to narrow it down to a Department; they don't seem to pass on Id requests to their other departments if you ask the wrong one.

Or start local and ask the Illinois State Archaeological Survey

I see what you mean about it being Picasso-esque

Maybe take it to one of the big auction houses for a second opinion.

Not Picasso or Vallauris though because of the stoneware that it is made from.

Came across a couple of Picasso-esque pieces by Geoffrey Eastop, made after Aldermaston. Maybe one of his?

I bought a similar one to the one of Geoffrey's illustrated in the link directly from him in 2010. The stoneware he used had a white body and it has a painted signature.
