Mishima/Buncheong pottery vase

Post by NaomiM on February 5th 2017, 3:31 am

Small vase with top quality buncheong / mishima decor. Antler-style impressed mark doesn't seem to be Japanese and the clay colour didn't look right for Korean. I still think it's Japanese but maybe there's a studio potter with Japanese links doing this in the West?

The stoneware body looks the same as that used by Motoko Wakana when she was over here but, as you say, doesn't look like that usually used in Korea or Japan.

Can't help with the mark but agree that it is seems likely to be a Japanese potter working in the West.

There's a lot of work involved in making it!

Indeed. Most of the traditionally made pieces and Western potters copying the technique are far messier. This looks like a traditionally trained Far Eastern potter who's tidied it up for a Western market.
