Is this Chelsea?

Post by lindylou08 on January 6th 2017, 3:28 pm

I'm hoping for some help with this small thrown earthenware bowl / dish .

I've found a platter with an almost identical design on line that has been attributed to Chelsea . However that one was not thrown but appears to have been hump moulded and has no foot rim

COULD this be Chelsea. With a bit of imagination there is a mark that could be initials on the front at 5o'clock

Thanks

the monogram shows it was decorated by Joyce Morgan. I posted an image of a very similar one at the bottom of page one in the Chelsea thread

the sunface was very en vogue in the 60's and 70's but it may have been made later

The black back on red clay with a tiny rope hanger is trademark Chelsea. I know little about the set up at Chelsea or how many got made but these little unmarked wall plates crop up a lot in London, mostly its flowers on them but failing that it is 60's female images. Maybe these were the bread a butter items they sold to pay the bills? Even unmarked I never doubt the origins now.

It could be a good area to collect as the prices are all over the place. But tend to be very reasonable. They have a very specific origin, a place and time you can point at and say that is 60's/70's design. That normally helps command high prices but with Chelsea 90% of what I see can be bought in the £5-£10 range. Sounds like a bargain for 40-50 year old bit of pottery design.

I don't know why I doubted that it was Chelsea. Think its because the only plates I've seen or handled were decorated with flowers. This seems to be more finely potted too. Looking at the Chelsea thread here has made me realise there are far more interesting designs.

I would go for Joyce Morgan JEM pieces as well as a few others that are marked with specific monogram. I believe that they did evening classes for the public who could copy 'standard' printed patterns/designs - there is a lot of very amateur pieces about that are best avoided.

Go for the pretty girls, if you can find them also.

I read that about amateur pieces too but someone on the forum said this was not the case?

There's a Pathe? film of Chelsea Pottery showing the decorators. Although they had experienced potters, the decorators were a mix of hobbyists who popped in after work and arts-teacher types.
