Re: Peterborough - Festival of Antiques
Well I had a very good fair, and all the better for seeing you and Lesley Dan (with supplies - thanks Lesley!!). But perhaps, as a seller, more people came to me because there was less good stuff? There were certainly plenty of sellers.
I did a trip round the Exec Centre early in the morning but couldn't find Nic (again)!

Re: Peterborough - Festival of Antiques
Dan found me in the Exec - so I do exist!
I had a terrible fair - two tiny £40 sales over the two days. Would have been cheaper for me to sit at home burning money. The nearby stall selling £5-10 bits of chintz was doing a rip-roaring trade, though...
Whole swathes of the fair seemed quite car-booty. I was much more impressed by the general standard of stock in the Exec last time, which is why I pitched up in there. This time... too many old-lady teapots and Beswick horses.
I'm hoping with the upcoming Newark being the last major international fair before the Christmas selling season that trade will be a little more brisk for the higher-price items... otherwise everyone I know will be getting gift-wrapped IOUs at this rate.

Phew, I was beginning to wonder if you were computer generated
As I only have a vague idea what you look like (avatar from some time back) and what you stock is I suppose it's not too surprising.

Yikes, that's bad news. I have had fairs like that but never Peterborough, it has usually been kind to me and this one was best since March 2008. Strange. Next time I will probably be cursing and you will clear your stall.
Re: Peterborough - Festival of Antiques
I'm not altogether sure I'm going to continue with general fairs - at least with my current stock.
March's Peterborough only worked for me because of a single very lucky £850 sale in the final few minutes of the last day, otherwise it would have been as bad as the last one. The last Newark was also beyond dreadful (although the one before that was fairly amazing).
Next year, unless the upcoming Newark is great, will probably be about striking a balance between internet sales and a handful of specialist glass/midcentury fairs throughout the year. It's just too tiring having to explain why a vase is worth £1k, only to find out that the person doesn't want to spend any more than £50 on a decorative lump to coordinate with their bathroom.

Re: Peterborough - Festival of Antiques
I'm sorry to say Nic, but I think you are definately aiming at the wrong market, general fair goers are not going to be parting with £1000 for a piece in a shed in a field. Also i'm happy for you that you can be derisory about someone spending £50, to some of us poor folk thats a lot of money.

Re: Peterborough - Festival of Antiques
I'm not deriding folk spending £50 - I'm not even deriding folk who know that they've only got £50 to spend but will still gladly stand there asking lengthy questions about the pricier items when I could be serving actual customers. Well, not much. I'm just saying that they're tiring.
A good quarter of my stock is aimed at folk with £50 in their pocket!

Re: Peterborough - Festival of Antiques
That said, you will also get people in sheds in fields in the middle of nowhere with a grand in their pocket to spend - if you've got the right stuff.
Unfortunately the 'right stuff' seems to consist mostly of the usual tired antiques fair tropes doing the rounds for the last 30 years - Moorcroft, Lalique, etc... the stuff that, by dint of its popularity, will almost always have fairly tiny margins from quite large outlays. There's no fun in that for me.

Re: Peterborough - Festival of Antiques
I visited on Friday, as a buyer, for the first time so can't compare it with previous fairs but felt that it was OK. I spent around £250 but would have been happier spending much more.
I did feel while queuing to get in that most of the customers were there for a day out in the sun and to buy the odd item and I can't say that I saw a great deal of major selling going on.
For what it's worth, I don't think that it is a fair that I would feel confident of selling high value items to the public at or even that much to the public.
My real disappointment was that the men that I saw wearing shorts didn't look that stupid but I was of course fortunate that I could not see myself.

Re: Peterborough - Festival of Antiques
In terms of fair / boot sale fashion, I did mention to my wife about wanting to get a "bum-bag" like I had when I was a kid. She was rather horrified

Re: Peterborough - Festival of Antiques
I loved it and broke my record by spending 6 hours there!!
Most of the dealers were selling pottery and most of the pottery was 20th Century art or studio pottery so I was like a kid in a sweet shop (plus you hadn't creamed off the good stuff)
