Majolica pierced fern vase - Bellevue Pottery, Rye

Post by NaomiM on September 4th 2016, 2:15 am

Picked this up but couldn't decide if it was Castle Hedingham, Belgium, or Bulgarian or something else entirely, so I left it. Unmarked.
It's a double walled vase - there's  a central tube to hold the water, while the outer wall is pierced

I can see why you think it is Castle Hedingham. I have had a few items of Binghams work and all have been marked apart from some cups. But I think his glazes are a bit drier than this item, yours looks a bit shiny compared with what I have seem. I don't think its foreign though. I think its probably early Rye. Right colours, glaze and they didn't mark. Take a look and see what you think.

It could well be Bellvue Rye.

The incised mark is often difficult to see under the glaze.

I've taken some more photos. Closest I can find is Victorian majolica in the style of George Jones

George Jones would be white earthenware. Still 99% certain it's Rye, and a good bit.
