Help With Identifying Mid Century Italian Horse Pottery

Hello! My in-laws received this unusual piece of Italian pottery in 1964. I am trying to identify the artist. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't give up... ID ing ceramics is often not a 10 min thing - it can take years. ... and this is a very helpful place with people who are extremely knowledgeable / helpful but you have picked one of the hard ones!

Thanks to everyone for their help! I think it's such a cool piece. My mother-in-law said that when she received it as a wedding gift in the 60s, she thought it was the ugliest thing she had ever seen (!!) but as the years passed, it grew on her and eventually became one of her favorite items. She had it displayed in her home for almost 50 years before passing it on to us.
