BR mark, Ralph Booth, Whitchurch, Hampshire

Brown vase with sgraffito decoration under glaze.
I got this in Overton so it might be a potter from the Hants/Berks area.
Monogram RB 87
5" wide 4.5" tall

To add, the sgraffito decoration has been infilled with a thin cream-coloured clay before the area has been glazed. The area below the glaze has been scraped clean.

This teapot has some charm to it outside it's understated form.

Alan Brough, maybe? Although I think the mark is more like a RB or BR.

Spotted another one, this time in Andover. Must have been a local N.Hants/W.Berks potter.

I'm sure we've had this mark a few times before, from me and RVsaid. Seems to be a (hobby?) potter local to the N Hampshire / West Berkshire area. BR or RB mark

Too good for a hobby potter in my opinion.

The guy's ok (I'm assuming it's a he), but may be self taught as his pieces lack one or two professional touches, eg. The thumb rest on the handle.

I had a long discussion with Michael OBrien recently about thumb rests and he told me how they are a give away to the knowledge and experience a potter has.

Using that information, I would say that the one on this jug shows that whoever made it had absolutely no idea what it was for.

But none the less, a well made classical style jug, with competent decoration.
I think I would have had a go at it.

Agreed, SP. thumb rest works well but it's the only time I've seen one added as a wedge shaped piece of clay.
Plus they've marked it twice. Students tend do that in pottery class when you had to leave unfinished pieces on the shelf until the next session a week later.

Forget the thumb-rest (this could spawn it's own thread), This ain't a student piece.

Ruth Bradbury has a similar mark but not her usual style so probably just a coincidence
