I am not 100% sure this vase in by Alan, but it looks right. Here is the only painted mark I've seen: http://www.studiopottery.com/cgi-bin/pp.cgi?item=6380
He signed his pieces with a stamp signature in most cases. Unless this is by someone else?

It doesn't look like any pot of Alan Brough's that I have seen and all of the ones that I have seen have had an impressed seal. It could be though but I would need more convincing.

Amazing coincidence I say this piece and realised a similar mark on one of my pots. Mine looks like the one on the studio pottery site, it has a kick under the "B" but remarkably similar, hope this helps

I've seen several pots on ebay with a written AB mark attributed to Alan Brough. I know we should take ebay attributions with a pinch of salt, but it does look very similar to the monogram on the tile on StudioPottery

Yes, the mark from the StudioPottery site is really similar, that's what made me think it's Alan's pot. However as studio-pots mentioned the seal mark would be more convincing. Great stuff Clara, it looks like we all can find something useful on this forum  Happy

studiopottery.com is not always a reliable source of information either, there are errors on the site (I'm not saying this is one, I don't know), if you contact them about incorrect information you do not get any reply.

I'm wondering if it's AW - maybe a variation of Alan Ward's mark

They are not the only ones  Happy  I have recently contacted Mark Hill about one mistake in his book, he never bothered to write back, oh well it's good it's 21st century and we can all share information.

Interesting lead Naomi, I have found some items on ebay with AW's mark. They do look similar.

Painted AB mark - probably Alan Beastow (not Alan Brough) Empty Alan Brough? Alan Bleestow?

Post by studio-pots August 13th 2014, 8:37 pm

James Hazlewood, who is working on the revised edition has contacted this site and I for one have pointed out a few things that need changing to him.

Unfortunately, it is an endless task trying to up date everything and at some point it needs to be published so there are always going to be mistakes or additions not made.

I've split these from the Alan Brough thread because it's not certain they are by Brough.
Adrian Brough was recently asked about this mark (example below) and said it wasn't his father's, but it has a dot unlike the ones above.
Most likely by Alan Beastow

This mark has been attributed to Alan Beastow, and is dated '68 when Brough was at St Ives, so unlikely to be by him; Brough occasionally used a written mark much later in his career, c.1990s-2000s.
