Hi, hoping for some help with some unusual terracotta animals. These are really well made. The detail in them is great. Made to look like soft toys with repairs and stitching. The articulated parts are held by twine. The photo's don't do them justice. They were an auction lot that I thought was going far too cheap and they appealed to my curiosity. I cant trace anything online. No marks on them at all. Dog is about 11cm in length, rabbit about 20cm and monkey about 28cm. Thanks for taking a look

I think they are made in a mould with a clay-based resin. I've seen similar detail on other sets of figurines (teddy bears, for example). I doubt they're very old. The set might be from a series of children's books. There might be a copyright symbol and makers mark if you look closely.
But I could be barking up the wrong tree :)

any suggestion is more help. Not sure about the resin as they sound like terracotta but I am at zero on these as far as knowledge goes. Will try the resin/clay trail. Thanks Naomi.

I dont think you'd get the same level of detail if it was solely clay such as terracotta.

The monkey and dog look like they're based on Steiff toys so might be German

I wondered if they were puppets but I can't see where they'd attach the strings

Many more hours searching has revealed...the same as before ! I thought these would be easily found but that's how it goes sometimes. Steiff would be really really nice :-) No where for strings to go at all. The Mechanics of these are on the inside so hollow or at least little tunnels to link the pieces together with the twine. I am thinking these were more Art than Toy ?? The search goes on. Thanks for the comments all.

Just had a crazy idea. Do you think they could be props for a TV show? They really remind me of something, I feel like I have seen them before. They look so well done that they could have been used for filming. It is the type of thing that gets made and would explain the quality and lack of marks. Worth a hunt through ITV and BBC shows from the 70's and 80's after that point I guess it will all be cartoons.

Hi all sorry for the late replies. Mordeep...I also had the '70's TV Show' and felt they were familiar. But after far too many childrens characters, Millions of the little buggers, I gave up. I had them at a Fair today and a gentleman there also thought German.
Styleinvasion..he does look the double of Jocko.?? The rabbit looks similar to some steiff but how different can rabbits be lol. It might be worth an email to see what happens. Everybody that sees them first thinks they are soft toys until they pick them up and everyone comments on how well done they are. I will let you know if I get anything and please let me know if anything else comes up. I appreciate all the help. Thanks. Pete

The one TV show I was thinking of is I love Hartley. The Dog I keep seeing in my mind walking with a puppet type of movement (just thinking out Loud here)
