I purchased this kabura tokkuri online thinking it was an antique Japanese example. Now I have it in hand I am not so sure, I don't recognize the glaze, other than the fact that it is wood fired and the grey clay isn't what I would expect. I'd love to hear the thoughts of the board. Western or Japanese? Also, is it even old? It feels old but that may just be an aspect of the wood firing.

Thanks for your help,

Alex

Could be wrong, but it looks to me to be by a studio potter influenced by Japanese Bizen wares or similar, but I don't think it's Japanese. More likely to be by a potter local to you.

Looks like Raku with a Lustre finish to me, I'm not seeing the Bizen connection to be honest.

Probably a potter not too far from you though.

My bad, I didn't recognise it as raku. Can see it now. I think you're right, potty.

Edited: Not sure it's raku, T he shape is typical of late 19th- early 20thC Chinese tiger whisky flasks

Thanks so much guys, western style raku makes absolute sense and gives us a post 1950s date. Your help has been invaluable!
