brown glazed flask Empty brown glazed flask

Post by bistoboy March 13th 2015, 8:50 am

i recently bought this flask - brown glazed with applied floral decoration.  I thought the term used to describe it would be 'treacle' glazed, but on looking through lots of online sites, i'm thinking it might be considered Rockinham ware?

Anyhow, whatever you want to call it, the big question is age and authenticity.  The condition is very good, just a couple of pitted bits in the glaze where it's bubbled in the kiln, and some sign of crazing underneath.  Has anyone on the forum ever seen these produced recently - Is it 20thc or really an antique?

It does seem to have some age to it, so C19th is a possibility. Moulded. Treacle glazed. Spirit or liquour bottle, maybe? Continential would be my guess, but US is a possibility.

Not something I know anything about, but I don't think it's modern.

The decoration appears to be moulded rather than applied though.

From the mould lines, I would think it made for more of a mass.

It's not as round as a traditionally shaped pilgrim bottle, but it's narrow profile implies it might have been made for travellers.

I really don't know. Doesn't feel heavy enough or dense like stoneware though
