Kutani sake cup

Post by denbydump on November 23rd 2014, 9:39 pm

Not quite my normal thing, but there's something about it. 1-7/8 in high, I'm guessing it could be a match or toothpick holder.
2 cartouches, intricately painted, and also a continuous landscape, going around the top of the inside. Gilded
decoration in between the panels and on the 3 feet, though rubbed in patches.
A clear painted mark, hope it's the right way up!

I think the mark is upside down. The colours suggest Kutani

Kutani mark -

Looks like the right shape for a brush pot. I don't know if they use toothpicks.

Bit small for a brush pot Naomi, but "Kutani" has sent me in the right direction.
So it's Japanese, not Chinese (Hey what do I know), It's a Sake cup i think.

Possibly Kutani Sei, need a bit more time to search through.
