Can anybody help ID glass bottles found in the Mersey??

Post by rachelrh on October 9th 2014, 12:38 pm

Hi everybody

I am a doctoral student doing a study relating to historial flooding and pollution. As part of it I am looking at the reworking of artefacts thrown into the river Mersey and I have found 2 bottles with codes on the bottom. They are both broken and so I cannot date based on the bottle shape/neck etc. I was wondering if anybody could help me to identify roughly when they were produced and for what purpose??

The first has the below printed on its base:

T 143

S M 40

UGB

And the second:

W 595

L         I

 UGB

I known UGB stands for United Glass Bottle Manufacturers Ltd but can anybody help decipher the other numbers/letters?

In case it helps, the other artefacts I have so far managed to get a date for range from 1853 to summer of 1950 (fairly broad but hopefully could help!).

Can anybody help??
