Joe Finch, Kolonyama Pottery, Lesotho, South Africa

Post by Sepultus on June 26th 2014, 3:56 pm

In 1968 Joe Finch was given a 2 year contract to set up a pottery in Lesotho, South Africa, the Kolonyama pottery was the result; there is some information regarding this pottery on the web so I presume it is still functioning.

Joe Finch now has a studio in Tanygroes, West Wales, I do not know if the following bowl is of Joe's era or of a later date.

It's a fine looking bowl with very pleasant brushwork.

You could email Joe and ask him if he can give you any information? Potters are usually very helpful.

Following on from studio-pots suggestion I emailed Joe and he very kindly replied:

The bowl shown was made, by Joe and decorated by Trudi, his wife, during one of their 3 month visits back to Kolonyama, probably in 1975; sadly the pottery closed about 10 years ago.

I thought that the shape and decoration suggested that it was a "Finch" production but I knew nothing about the pottery's output.

Thank you Sepultus for taking the trouble to get this useful information.
