Sgraffito owl mug - Arthur Griffiths?

Dealer thought it was by Arthur Griffiths, and the mark looks like his initials, aG, but can't find an example of Griffiths's mark for comparison.

there is an Arthur J Griffiths impressed mark in Goddens for 1948- its not as curvy as yours and in a rectangle rather than a circle. He worked at both Crowan and Leach whether that's any help or not I don't know

The mark does look quite like Arthur Griffith's mark but the mug is nothing like his work.

Agreed. It's more like a piece of Bideford pottery.
I'm wondering if an apprentice has got hold of one of Griffith's jugs to practice their sgraffito technique. I'll have a look through the list of potters at Crowan to see if someone like Matt Grimmitt was ever there.

The handle and shape of the jug wouldn't fit with Griffith's work either.
Don't understand the Crowan/Grimmitt reference, as Matt has only been potting for a few years and, although I don't know his age, guess that he might not have been born when Crowan closed in 1962.

Matt is Elijah Comfort's great great grandson so that I would guess he is in his late twenties/early thirties. Comfort was the old boy, who helped Michael Cardew in the early days at Winchcombe, having worked at the pottery then owned by the Beckett family before it had closed down in 1914.
Matt is really very inexperienced but I understand that he has been left in charge at the Winchcombe Pottery recently, so really thrown in at the deep end.

Matt's definitely one to watch.
However, in this respect I only meant someone of Matt's caliber, not necessarily Matt himself.

This isn't going to get this owl mug identified though. It's nothing like the work of Arthur Griffiths, nothing like anything made in Bideford or at the Crowan Pottery or anything that Matt Grimmitt has made.
