Zig Zag Pattern Bowl - NERYA POTTERY - Jaipur, India

Post by RoyJ99 on April 12th 2014, 5:00 pm

Bought this at a jumble sale today for 50p solely for the reason IK liked the colours lol. No great quality to it but wondering about its origins so throwing it out there for discussion.

Thanks

Roy

It's familiar. Gouda, maybe.

I agree with the familiarity of it, something is ringing somewhere in my head. Tbh I hadn't even thought Dutch but I will look into it.

I think we've had a couple of bowls similar to this - I had one and sunny the other - which weren't Id-ed, but I think Dutch is the best bet. Alternatively, Mexico or the Far East.

For me the glaze is too shiny to be Dutch but I could be wrong.

I'm pretty sure this is from India. Spotted a jug today with the country and Provence or town written on the base. Will upload a photo. Middle photo of the mark is the right way up: I - N

The jug I saw today.

On the base it looks like INDIA NERYA - hence the I-N on your pot.

Well it's taken me a couple of years to id it. I found a chipped pot a few years back which I thought was Delft or Gouda, but Gouda would have been fully marked, and the glaze was far too bright plus the material is more stoneware than the soft white clay of Delft.
