The closest thing I could find was "anhua" ware from Qing and Ming, but the wares are mostly white, incised, different forms, smaller, and the decor is hard to see. Does anyone have any opinions on what this could be? Its absolutely huge. Last photo is how it looked at the estate sale.

(It used to be a lamp, but I'm turning it back into a vase. Think that's a good idea? I hate lamps.)

Great vase. Lovely colour. Would be nice to see the base, if that's possible.
They were copied by British factories like Burmantoffs and Bretby, but probably not with this clarity of decoration.

Yeah, I'm pretty certain its Chinese. The whole house was full of Asian stuff. I'm dying to see the base too, but something is rusted or stuck DOWN inside there, so I can't get it off. Deciding on whether or not to use the boltcutters to just cut the bottom piece off so it will all come out. These things are more desirable as vases, but it'll have a hole in the bottom... I don't know. What would you do?

I would probably not be able to resist taking the base off so as to get a look at the base, but would probably ruin it in the process.

I know... I'm DYYYYING to see what it says under there.... Vases are much more desirable though, so I think I'm going to try to non-destructively remove the wiring so I can put it back together if need be. There's something wrong though, its rusted or something DEEP DOWN inside so it won't turn. If it is an anhua piece and I could be a very lucky man.

Thanks for your time Naomi!

I suspect there's a rod with a nut on the inside and plate on the outside to hold the wiring in place

What do you think the chances are of this being some kind of 1960's-70's thing?
This kind of thing was popular back then
What's your honest opinion?

I think its Burmantofts like you said actually. That's the closest looking thing I've found.

Gosh you're good. How did you get to know so much Naomi? Any certain books you can recommend? Or is it just life experience?

I don't know... I looked up that Burmantofts stuff, and its prettttttty darn similar. I've never seen any kind of Chinese ware like this before, have you? I'm not that knowledgeable about the really old Chinese stuff

I'm still trying to get the base off, something's stuck inside. I'm holding both ends of the rod but it won't turn.

Plus it was filled with about 25 pounds of lead birdshot too, tons of lead dust in there so I'm scared to fiddle with it now haha

Ah-ha, I found a Qing piece with IDENTICAL decor, same everything. Either Burmantofts copied this exact baluster vase, or mine is Chinese too. (Leaning towards Burmantofts though...) Same waves on the bottom, same thingies at the top, dragons and clouds, duck-fat yellow. The designs are so identical that it's bizarre.

I have seen Chinese pieces like this normally pre 18th century not pre 17th , I think its deffo Chinese, add that together with the fact that someone has attached it to a nice Chinese hardwood base and all the clues are pointing to Chinese, those wooden Chinese stands can be quite valuable too so be careful when removing

Yeah that beautiful Chinese base was one of the things that's taking me away from Burmantofts, and its really a nice one too. I'm finding some quite similar pieces on Google under "qing dynasty yellow porcelain". I really don't know what to think now, it might even really be Chinese like I'd hoped

Thank you very much Carlos, knowledge is very valuable and I appreciate you and Naomi taking the time to share yours with me

no problem mate, I am just an interested potaholic , Naomi is more of an expert but antiques are full of opinions, but seeing that base would clear it up.

I am 90% sure its Chinese though

I know, I'm holding both ends with pliers but the rod won't turn, something's rusted or stuck or soldered. I really want to see what's under there!

I stopped fiddling with it for now. I sent photos off to our Bonham's rep, I'll have to decide what to do after I find out what it is.

Plus its filled with very fine lead dust and I don't want to get it all over my house lol... Its probably a biohazard as it is. It was filled with about 20 pounds of lead birdshot when it was turned into a lamp, to keep it from tipping over. I heard them rolling around on the car ride home, was hoping it was gold coins

I know though, I just want ONE PEEK under there!! Let me unscrew it ONE CENTIMETER MORE so I can get a mirror under there or something!! Ahh!!

Its stuck tight... I turned so hard that the steel tube inside actually has a fissure in it. Something's wrong in there >:(

Really appreciate your update and your vase has been fascinating me, good luck and please keep us posted. Shame it wasn't gold coins used to weight it down : (

Well, I posted it on a forum dediated to Chinese antique ceramics, really smart guys, and they're thinking that its what I think it is, Guangxu, late Qing.

"The tail of the dragon really looks as if it was late Qing dynasty."

"from what I can see, the dragon looks like the old style of decoration, the way the five claws are done are from earlier periods"

"you just might have something valuable here"

Its really good news, in my mind I was refusing to believe it could be authentic because of how rare it would be, but I'm starting to get a little happier now : )
