Irish jug Empty Irish jug

Post by lindylou08 May 26th 2014, 1:22 pm

Hi All
Plans scrapped for today so thought I'd ask for help with a couple of items .

This large jug ( 21.5cm high) is decorated with an applied motif of a celtic knot. The handle has been applied/ finished in a distinctive way. However there are no marks to the base other than ' 1945 Donegal Ireland trip' written in pen . The base is very clean and looks ' new' to me but that date of 1945 would disprove that  - if it hasn't recently been written !! Call  me an old cynic.............

Anyway its got lovely proportions and is a good size, and I would be grateful for any ideas any of you might have re pottery and approximate age ( if it was bought in 1945 it's not to say it was new when purchased)

It might be that date, but difficult to track down if it is. I suspect more modern, in which case Colm de Ris Pottery is a good candidate.

I have emailed him as I agree that body, glaze and applied motifs are similar.
Have put forward my idea that possibly someone, for whatever reason, has attempted to make it appear older than it is and that if it isn't his work he may have some ideas about origin as handle application is so unusual.
Mind you although he is in Dublin, Donegal is right acroos the other side of Ireland - not exactly close by.

I suspect it belonged to an elderly relative who's memory is failing.  Happy

looks more 95 to 45, possibly a local potter who sells through tourist shops which sell ''genuine donegal handcrafts'' will be very difficult to identify , some of the things in those shops dont even come from donegal.

but there are many potteries in donegal

letterkenny pottery
moville pottery
