Kind Of Creepy Wood Carved Canister (African? Islander?)

Post by Dannd on October 19th 2013, 3:06 am

Thought I'd post this here to see what others opinions are concerning the origin of this piece. All carved from a solid piece (except the cap) hallowed on the inside with a plug in the bottom. I dont even know where to start as I've never come across anything like this piece before. Any help would be appreciated!

Very nice. Not something I've come across before. Might be African or from somewhere like New Guinea, but could it be native Canadian?
How big is it? Looks like the sort of thing a tribe would brew their cassava beer in (maybe that's why the figure is holding his head - suffering from a hangover).
I think the clue will be in what type of wood it is; native species or tropical.

Looks like a form of large hollow grass / tree fern / bamboo - which would explain the bung at the base.

I think it's coconut wood (tree trunk, rather than shells). Looking more like Indonesian

The first problem Im consistently running into is the fact all these cultures/tribal groups from various areas tend to carve highly polished hardwood and this is definitely an unpolished lightweight soft wood. The other problem I seem to have is the stylizing of the figure, most of the cultures discussed have very stylized representations of humans. None of which I can find matching this particular more "realistic" style.

Naomi, you hit the nail on the head with the coconut wood, I just looked up the grain and its an exact match. Unfortunately Indonesian coconut wood carving doesnt bring up anything at all (except carved coconuts) and to make it worse with the amount of islander cultures there are around the world doesnt make it easier either! Oh well I will just keep trying keyword searches and see if anything turns up! The type of wood at least makes it easier. Thank you both for your help!
