Allan & John Hughes, Anvil Pottery / Wilan Pottery

Post by NaomiM on March 25th 2013, 9:42 pm

Vase with sgraffito decoration, marked with the anvil, plus paper label.
Although still in operation, this points to it being a vintage piece.

From their website www.anvilpottery.co.uk =

Some of our pots are stamped with an ‘anvil’ on the base. Mostly, these were made by partner John Hughes (now retired)

I wonder if it's one of John Harlow's pieces from Whitnell Pottery.

aka Anvil Pottery

From their website -

Some of our pots are stamped with an ‘anvil’ on the base. Mostly, these were made by partner John Hughes (now retired). Allan Hughes has rarely used the mark, preferring the role of an ‘anonymous potter’.

Anvil Pottery large charger - I guess early 80s by John Hughes 'The Road of Excess Leads to the Palace of Wisdom' (Quote by English Poet William Blake 1757-1827).
