Studio Stoneware Cheese dish - Terry Godby

Post by Davee on April 9th 2013, 9:16 pm

Anyone recognise the style of this, unfortunately unmarked, the base has a central unglazed 'button'

The decoration but more importantly the unglazed centre to the base suggest to me that it might have been made by Chris Lewis, who pots at South Heighton near Newhaven.

For around 20 years before the early part of this century he didn't mark his work. I have a plate with the unglazed area as your dish and the colours of brush decoration would match with his work from that period. It is a little "over decorated" compared to his work that I know but I only met him in the late 1990s.

He has a web site so the best thing would be to email him with the images.

No luck there, Chris Lewis was kind enough to reply, but it wasn't one of his.

It is a quality well made piece Potty. Its so frustrating that so many potters never marked their work.

Sounds promising for those pots, they certainly seem to have an Eeles connection.

Good spot  Most Excellent

Yes, a couple of times I've seen very similar Eeles pots and would have identified these as Eeles if it hadn't been for the mark. Someone else thought they were by an ex-Leach apprentice but seems they got the wrong one.

I'm pretty sure this is by Terry Godby. I bought a few pieces new from a long-gone shop in Enfield that used to sell his work, and have acquired some more second-hand since.

I spotted a jug in the same pattern on the car boot sale last week, and it was marked with a G impressed stamp. there is little info about Terry Godby though.

It wasn't his shop, it was a toy shop that had diversified and stocked various potters. I must have got these there sometime in the late 1980s. Sorry about the terrible photo: it's a plant holder holding a rather temperamental plant I didn't want to move:

This one has a rather different glaze:

I've got something with the same pattern as the cheese dish: I got it secondhand, but I seem to remember, or remember remembering, seeing the same decoration on sale in the shop.
